ESMC News<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n
Update from the Executive Director\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>
\nESMC held its third quarterly in-person meeting in Las Vegas February 11 \u2013 12 in conjunction with the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD). Thank you to NACD for hosting us during their annual meeting and for inviting ESMC to participate in their member meeting as well. It was a great opportunity to discuss continued opportunities to collaborate.ESMC \/ ESMRC had a robust two days of meetings, capped by in-person working group sessions that allowed cross-fertilization among the four working groups. Our thanks to Founding Circle Member Julie DiNatale of Corteva for chairing the meeting and to all members who attended and participated in the sessions.The meeting outcomes included significant progress updates from the Technical Working Groups which resulted in votes on some Working Group recommendations for investments and teeing up additional Working Group recommendations for votes in the near future. We also discussed pilot projects \u2013 updates on outcomes of our 2019 pilot as well as plans for 2020 pilots that have been announced and that are in development.<\/p>\n

Great progress was made discussing the current soil carbon sampling protocol and exploring issues of certainty, cost-benefit analysis, stratification approaches, and other logistical issues. And, we continued to explore refinements to the protocol and the quantification approaches to meet the specific needs of each target market for which we are quantifying and generating assets.
\n
\nWe look forward to continued progress as we delve further into pilot testing our program and ensuring alignment with members. The ESMC team has begun planning for our May member meeting, and we welcome member suggestions for meeting topics as well.<\/p>\n

New Funding Awards for ESMC<\/strong>
\nThrough the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, ESMC is one of five organizations to receive funding through The Nature Conservancy\u2019s U.S. Natural Climate Solutions Accelerator program. ESMC is pleased to be receiving $100,000 to support assessment and pilot testing various advanced technologies for asset quantification and verification in the Consortium\u2019s efforts to develop approaches necessary to drive down MRV costs and launch a scalable national ecosystem services market trading program by 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

\nFebruary 18 \u2013 ESMC Executive Director, Debbie Reed, is serving as a panelist for a discussion exploring how \u201cbig data\u201d is being used to ensure our agriculture system can meet the food demands of a growing global population while also improving soil health, carbon sequestration and farm profitability. \nFebruary 20 \u2013 ESMC team member, Bruce Knight, is speaking on the panel, \u201cSustainability from Policy to Practice at the Nitrogen Sustainability Symposium in Sonoma, California.<\/p>\n

\nFebruary 27 – 29 \u2013 Knight will be on the Main Stage with ESMC Member, The Fertilizer Institute, for a Learning Center Session on February 27 entitled, \u201cInvesting in Profitability through 4R Nutrient Stewardship and Conservation, at the Commodity Classic in San Antonio, Texas.<\/p>\n

\nMarch 9 – 13 \u2013 ESMC team member Bruce Knight will be speaking at the \u201cAgTech and GHG Emissions: New Solutions\u201d session on March 10 at the Waves of Change: Charting the Energy Transition <\/em>CERAWeek in Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n

First North American Regional Meeting of the 4 Per 1000 Initiative\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>
\nMarch 17 \u2013 18 \u2013 Debbie Reed will be participating in the first organizing meeting for the North American Region of the 4 Per 1000 Initiative as a Roundtable Contributor on March 17 in Montreal, Canada. The objective of the 4p1000<\/a> regional meeting is to bring together the members, regional partners of the Initiative and anyone interested in developing a regional roadmap of concrete actions on the ground, for carbon storage in soils with the help of agriculture and forestry.<\/p>\n

Enhancing Investment in Soil Health and Carbon Storage: Frontiers for Linking Finance and Carbon Accounting Workshop\u00a0<\/strong>
